Wage & Hour

California has some of the strongest laws in the country protecting employee wages and hours. Employers must timely pay employees all wages due, accompanied by an itemized wage statement. Employees must be paid their hourly wage and at least the minimum wage, for all hours worked. Employees have a right to receive premium pay for their overtime hours, missed meal breaks, and missed rest breaks. Employers are prohibited from passing on the cost of doing business, and must reimburse employees for necessary business-related expenses.

Most workers in the economy should be paid on an hourly basis; however, it is common for employers to misclassify workers, either as exempt salaried employees, or as independent contractors.
